Different by Design: VFC Groups Unmatched Engineering Capabilities
Engineering Lightning Protection for the Next Generation of Facilities
At the VFC Group, lightning protection is not treated as a commodity, it is treated as engineering. Our approach is simple but powerful: every system we design must meet the real protection needs of the facility while fully complying with the most rigorous industry standards. It is one of the many reasons we say we are Different by Design.
Over the past year alone, the VFC Group designed more than 250 lightning protection systems through our free engineering services program, along with an additional 30 grounding systems through our Lyncole division. That means an additional 280 facilities across the United States that will receive properly engineered lightning protection built to UL and NFPA standards. No other lightning protection company in the United States came close to that level of free system design activity.
Those numbers represent more than engineering output, they represent risk reduction for critical infrastructure. Every design corresponds to a facility that will be protected against one of nature’s most destructive forces.
For decades, lightning protection systems have too often been approached with a “low-bidder” mindset. Designs were frequently created simply to meet minimum installation expectations or to reduce vendor costs. In many cases, this approach produced systems that technically existed but were not optimized for the facility they were supposed to protect.
At VFC, we believe those days should be over.
Our design philosophy focuses on one priority: standard-compliant protection that serves the facility, not the bid sheet. Every system is engineered with the goal of meeting the intent of NFPA 780, UL and International standards, ensuring that the lightning protection system performs as intended when it matters most.
This approach requires deep technical expertise and real-world experience. VFC’s engineering and design teams work with a wide range of facilities, from manufacturing plants and hospitals to data centers, telecommunications infrastructure, and mission-critical operations. Each facility presents unique structural, electrical, and operational challenges that must be considered during the design process.
Because of this, our design teams collaborate closely with electrical engineers, consulting engineers, architects, and facility owners to ensure the protection system integrates properly with the building’s electrical infrastructure and grounding systems.
One of the most important aspects of the VFC approach is that these design services are available to the entire electrical engineering community. In many cases, VFC provides lightning protection design support at no cost to the specifying engineer.
This allows engineering firms to access specialized lightning protection expertise without increasing project costs. It also ensures that lightning protection is designed correctly at the earliest stages of the project, rather than being treated as an afterthought.
The result is better protection, stronger standard compliance, and fewer surprises during construction.
In an industry where lightning protection design has often been overlooked, the VFC Group continues to lead by bringing engineering rigor back to system design. Our commitment to proper design, compliance, and collaboration ensures that facilities receive protection systems that are not only installed, but truly engineered.
That is what it means to be Different by Design.
